H. G. Wells, in his 1906 In the Days of the Comet uses the vapors of a comet to trigger a deep and lasting change in humanity's perspective on themselves and the world. In the build-up to a great war, poor student William Leadford struggles against the harsh conditions the lower-class live under. He also falls in love with a middle-class girl named Nettie. But when he discovers that Nettie has eloped with a man of upper-class standing, William struggles with the betrayal, and in the disorder of his own mind decides to buy a revolver and kill them both. All through this a large comet lights the night sky with a green glow, bright enough that the street lamps are left unlit.

Yes some socialism but that is not the essence of the book. In fact the first half of the book satirizes socialism.

I see the book as similar to buddhist enlightenment stories, only it happens not to one deserving adept, but to everyone on earth through the gift gas from a comet. Yes wells adds what he thinks the world will look like after people think more compassionately, and this detracts a little from the beauty and purpose of the story as a whole. He adds a few biblical references to suggest the end time is a time on earth after people have embraced a more natural way of being.. These aside, the book is still relevant today to suggest that our true nature has always been compassion, that our whole attitude of competitive advantage could be washed away overnight.

Alternate Reality told as Matter-of-fact event narrative
A good read
A lost classic. Can't believe I had never read it. The atmosphere of the story is compelling. How scary living in a society so devoid of passion and emotion.
He goes on and on (and on) describing a room or other scene. The book is also strongly socialist in Outlook.
I enjoy stories of the future. Usually the future is ugly (1984), or ugly beneath a veneer of perfection (Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, This Perfect Day)."Comet" differs in that it shows the present to be the hellish existence, and it's the future that holds bright promise.
The coming of the comet promises a superior change in mankind. However the destruction of art, books , architecture etc denies mankind freewill , eliminating choice is the first thing an Authoritarian Government would do (see Putin,Eregon)
This book shows its age in the language and in the writing. It is very much a philosophical story which requires the reader to think and to feel. For those of us unused to a story like this, it is a slow and somewhat difficult read. There is action but it is overwhelmed by the thoughts presented. I'm glad I finished it. I'm still trying to fully understand it...
